Work while you work
Play while you play
One thing each time
That is the way
All that you do
Do with your might
Things done by half
Are not done right.
New friends and old friends
Make new friends but keep the old,
those are silver, these are gold.
New made friendships, like new wine,
age will mellow and refine.
Friendships that have stood the test,
time and change are surely best;
Brow may wrinkle, hair grow gray,
friendship never knows decay.
For 'mid old friends tried and true,
once more we our youth renew.
But old friends, alas may die,
new friends must their place supply.
Cherish friendship in your breast,
new is good, but old is best;
Make new friends but keep the old;
those are silver, these are gold.
In elementary school, there was this English teacher who would always ask us to write these lines when we fail to do homework or rowdy in class or being naughty whatever it is. Thereafter, it then turned to that every beginning of her lessons we were to recite these lines, which means we recited everyday, for like one or two years?
Initially we thought that was just some other English-y things she wanted to impart.
Only at the end of the day did we realise that she was actually instilling these values into us. There were a few others which I actually forgot. These two were the only distinct ones which I will never forget.
How simple, yet meaningful.
